Action C4: Removal of Invasive Alien Species – Ailanthus altissima (Tree-of-Heaven)

The project aims to remove and/or control invasive alien plant species which have overrun large areas of the Buskett woodland, displacing indigenous and endemic species and possibly causing damage to structures in the project area.

The removal and continued follow-up interventions of invasive alien plant species will contribute to the restoration of the Buskett woodland. The targeted invasive species are Ailanthus altissima (Tree-of-Heaven), Ricinus communis (Castor Oil Tree), Agave spp. (Century plants), Vitis spp. (Wild grape vine) and Arundo donax (Giant reed).

The methodology employed, as well as the period of time when removal of invasive alien plant species is carried out, depends on the reproductive biology, size and location of the target species. Plant material removed from Buskett is transported to the PARK & Initiatives Directorate composting area, located at Ta’ Qali, and incinerated in controlled conditions.

Removal of alien species from Buskett is an ongoing process, which began in 2014 and is expected to continue well into the foreseeable future.
